JonTron Removed from Yooka-Laylee Voice Cast Over Racist Comments

Jon Jafari was removed from the voice cast of Yooka-Laylee because of racist and anti-immigrant comments

The developers of the upcoming game Yooka-Laylee, Playtonic Games, decided to drop YouTuber JonTron from the voice cast of the game. This came after the YouTube personality made a few racist and anti-immigrant comments on Twitter.

JonTron, with the real name Jon Jafari, is the co-founder of Normal Boots, a platform which hosts many channels related to gaming. On March 12th, he made the comments while tweeting about his support of the Iowa Representative Steve King. The politician claimed that civilization cannot be rebuilt with “somebody else’s babies”.

JonTron shares racist and anti-immigrant convictions

Jafari defended King’s claim, and he also added that Mexicans were actually trying to recapture the American territory. He also said that the United States did not need immigrants “from incompatible places”. Among other statements made by Jafari, there was also his belief that wealthy black people committed more crimes that poor white people.

As expected, his claims spiced a lot of controversy on the internet. Playtonic Games became aware of Jafari’s racist convictions only after the development of Yooka-Laylee had been completed. Thus, they announced that his voice would be removed through an upcoming update.

The developers chose Jafari to voice one of the game characters after they found out that the YouTuber was a fan of Banjo-Kazooie, the predecessor of Yooka-Laylee. Jafari received the voice acting opportunity in February 2015, before the crowdfunding campaign for the game even started.

After the aggressive claims, Jafari lost thousands of subscribers. However, he still remained with over 3.1 million subscribers at present. After a lot of pressure, he posted a video in which he tried to clarify some of his statements. Despite this effort, Playtonic Games remained stern in their decision, declaring that they had always supported diversity.

“Playtonic is a studio that celebrates diversity in all forms and strives to make games that everyone can enjoy.”

The game Yooka-Laylee

Yooka-Laylee will be released on April 11th as a multiplatform game. It will be available for Windows, Linux, macOS, Xbox One, PlayStation One, and Nintendo Switch. Initially, Playtonic Games had planned on releasing a Wii U port, too, but they later abandoned the idea.

The name is meant to be a play on words for the musical instrument ukulele. It follows the model of the predecessor Banjo-Kazooie, which is a wordplay on banjo and kazoo.
