Peanuts can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attack

Researchers discovered a new method to maintain the health of the heart. They found that consuming peanuts during a meal could help people keep away from cardiovascular diseases and prevent strokes or heart attacks.

The study, which can be found in The Journal of Nutrition, was led by Penn State University Professor Penny Kris-Etherton, and it was developed in collaboration with other researchers from the same university. They discovered the benefits of peanuts for the health.

Add peanuts to your diet

If you consume three ounces of peanuts in combination with a meal rich in fats, then you can keep your blood vessels elastic. This is a good solution for men who are overweight, but struggle with no other health problems.

Besides, this food the capacity of lowering the triglyceride levels in blood. High levels of this fat can be really damaging for the arteries, but consuming peanuts can help them. This food makes them open and allow for a better circulation of the blood. Their clogging is avoided, therefore the risk of strokes or heart attack is lowered.

Immediately after a high-fat meal, the arteries become a little stiff. The researchers explained that this effect appears in the artery cells, which prevent them from dilating and being elastic. However, if you add some peanuts into the meal, the artery cells no longer resort to stiffness and the blood can flow freely through the elastic vessels.

Study involving overweight but healthy men

For the study, the researchers looked at 15 overweight men, but who were in good health. They received a control meal which consisted of a regular meal and a shake which contained three ounces of unsalted peanuts. There was also a control group which had to consume a shake with the same nutritional qualities which did not contain peanuts.

Then, they took some samples of blood which they tested for several proteins and fats. They also measured their blood flow with an ultrasound machine. The group which consumed peanuts had a reduction of 30 percent in the levels of triglycerides in their blood.

Now, the research team is planning to further analyze the benefits of this food and to look at the impact on both men and women who either struggle with obesity or are perfectly healthy.
