Americans Consume Less Dietary Salt

A new study suggests that the dietary salt addiction is losing its control over Americans. While producers opt to cut amounts in their edible products incrementally, consumers are becoming more aware of this health danger as well. Therefore, they consciously choose to consume more frugal amounts of salt. However, even though there are some positive outcomes in this area, there is a need for more efforts to combat the entire issue.

Dietary Salt Consumption Diminished over the Years yet It Is Not Enough

An extensive research surveyed around 172,000 households during the period between 2000 and 2014 in regards to salt addiction. The findings suggest that Americans started to purchase packaged drinks and foods with a smaller amount of salt. As a consequence, they ended up reducing the daily dosage from 2,300 mg to less than 2,000 mg.

On top of that, manufacturers themselves chose to become less reliable on salt. Therefore, packaged foods dropped in salt content by as much as 12%. The lead author of the study is Jennifer Poti who works as a research assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. Even though she found that the daily intake of sodium diminished considerably over the past 15 years, dietary salt is still a concern. This is because packaged foods are still supplying consumers with too high levels of salt.

The Recommended Daily Portion of Salt Is 1,500 Mg

The average amount of salt in every 4 ounces of snacks, dips, ingredients, and sauces dropped by 49 mg. However, these measures were not effective enough. The study found that there were up to 2% of U.S. households that managed to stay within optimal levels of salt. According to the American Heart Association, any salt excess can be linked to different health conditions such as high blood pressure, strokes, and heart disease.

Therefore, the American Heart Association urges consumers to limit their salt consumption to only 2,300 mg per day. This amount is the equivalent of one teaspoon. However, most adults are indicated to be even acerber and take down their daily portion to only 1,500 mg.
