Unhealthy foods affect the liver in short notice and increase the risk of diabetes.

Recent research suggests that even a single burger or a slice of pizza increases the risk of diabetes and liver disease among consumers. The experts from the Helmholtz Center and the German Diabetes Center joined their efforts to find out more about the impact of fattening and unhealthy foods on overall health.

Based on the study findings, the researchers have established that most of these foods contain palm oil which reduces the sensitivity of the body to insulin. Also, it influences the build-up of fat and affects the liver’s energy metabolism.

Previous studies have shown that early changes in the liver’s metabolism can lead in time to fatty liver disease in patients with Type 2 diabetes and overweight people. According to Dr. Michael Roden, one of the co-authors from the German Diabetes Center, just one dosage of palm oil is more than enough to affect the liver of healthy persons.

Also, the fat deposits trigger insulin resistance. During the study, the scientists analyzed only slim men. In the main control experiment, the participants consumed either a flavored drink of palm oil or a glass of water.

The saturated fat used in the palm oil drink equaled two pizza or two cheeseburgers with French fries. This study has shown that one high-fat meal can increase insulin resistance and the amount of fat deposited in the liver.

In addition to this, the study authors noted that the metabolic changes which occurred in the liver’s energy balance were very much alike those in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or Type 2 diabetes.

Palm oil can also affect the metabolic activity of the fatty tissue and the muscles, besides its detrimental effects on the liver. The public health specialists have come up with many strategies over the past few years to reduce the rates of obesity among Americans.

It is worth mentioning that childhood obesity has become a major public health concern in the United States and it represents of the leading factors influencing the development of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

As such, the experts recommend people healthy diets consisting of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and olive oil because they are rich in healthy fats.
